I flossed my teeth for about a week when I was twelve and had removable braces. It was annoying, messy, uncomfortable and time consuming, so the floss got put to the back of the bathroom cabinet never to be seen again. However, few of us realise the long-term benefits flossing effectively can bring to our oral health. Unlike a toothbrush (which cleans the top and outer surface of the teeth and gums,) floss is an interdental cleaner, designed specifically to clean the tight spaces between the teeth, i.e. the places that a toothbrush can't reach. While mouthwash can kill the bacteria that forms plaque, it can't remove the stubborn tartar and bits of food that can lodge in these places and cause us issues. For those who don't floss consistently, Philip's new Sonicare Airfloss is the easiest way to start cleaning between teeth. AirFloss can be used with either water or mouthwash and features unique air and micro-droplet technology to remove plaque where brushing can't.
Although it looks super complicated and like an unnecessary gadget, it essentially blasts the gaps between your teeth with a combination of liquid and air to remove plaque and food your toothbrush hasn't caught. You simply fill up the little liquid holder (like filling up an iron with water,) turn it on and start blasting between your teeth. It does take a little while to suck up the liquid and start shooting more than air, so make sure you give it around five test blasts before trying it on your teeth, but it's super simple to use. It's also exceptionally light, providing what feels like a puff of air rather than a scary or shocking blast of powerful liquid - which is what I was expecting.
This does look like some kind of tool you'd find in a dental surgery, but it's such an easy product to use and slip into your routine seamlessly. You can choose to use it every day after brushing, or just a couple of times a week to top up your oral care - particularly when you've been eating lots of grainy food or over-indulging on sugary sweets. The 'blast' button which shoots out the air is really quite quick, allowing you to move around the mouth in under a minute and leave your mouth feeling super fresh. The great thing about this gadget is that one can serve the entire family. Because the nozzle doesn't actually touch any part of the mouth, you can use it across family members to ensure everyone benefits from a little more care. It's recommended the nozzles are replaced around twice a year to keep the Airfloss functioning most effectively, but apart from that there's no real maintainance required.
Although this is a great gadget to have at home and one that is a real investment in your oral care routine, the price point may make it a piece of kit that needs to be added to this year's Christmas list. At £99.00 it's not cheap and really for those that want to invest in their smile. I'm sure this revolutionary piece of technology will be copied by other brands in the future and that the price point will come down, but in the meantime it's great to see new innovations coming out of an area traditionally associated with toothpaste.
