Until I met my boyfriend I had no idea how eczema could impact someone's life so much. I'm lucky enough to have pretty normal skin, not ever having suffered from anything other than a little heat rash. However, it's only in the last year I've become aware of a growing condition that affects millions of adults within the UK. Atopic Dermatitis (commonly known as eczema) is an inflammatory condition of the upper layer of skin that can appear all over the body. Painful and debilitating symptoms can include redness, blistering, oozing, crusting, scaling, thickening and sometimes pigmentation - all of which can have a significant impact on confidence. Not only can it be caused by irritants in the environment (including detergents, perfumes and even clothes,) but heat, humidity, extreme temperatures and even bathing can cause it to become worse. Anxiety and stress are also big factors within eczema flare ups, which causes a vicious circle which is hard to break. I've been working hard with my boyfriend to crack the issues associated with his eczema and find products that work for him (a more in-depth post at a later date,) but after a recent discovery Eucerin is definitely a brand he can now turn to for a little skin support.

Created over 100 years ago as a smooth basic ointment to carry other active ingredients, Eucerin was originally used as a pharmaceutical product to treat skin diseases. When Eucerin added the highly moisturising ingredient Urea in the 1980's, it instantly became known for its expertise in supporting highly irritated and dry skin. They have an extensive range of products that contain Urea to treat dry, itchy, irritated and flaky skin, as well as a basic range of body moisturisers and bath products to ensure skin is kept as smooth as possible. Although it's not the most glamorous of brands, I had no idea there were so many products available to help soothe skin, or that they each provided something a little different. After having a rummage and a play, here are the top five products I would totally recommend having a look at if your skin is suffering.
1. Replenishing Night Cream (£12.50)
We all know that our skin repairs itself more at night than during the day (because it's not full of makeup, city smog or busy trying to protect itself from sun damage,) so applying a night cream can be extremely beneficial. This effective cream can help to soothe dry skin overnight, leaving it feeling refreshed and smoother come morning.
2. Soothing Skin Balm (£8.50)
Similar to Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream in texture and performance, this much cheaper version is clinically proven to help support skin's own regeneration process. It's designed for very dry (and even cracked) skin, helping to soothe dry areas gently and leave them feeling regenerated. Not only does it instantly cool an irritated area, but it's a great product to take out and about and re-apply on the go.
3. Bath & Shower Oil (£9.00)
This is specially formulated with natural oils to replenish and protect the skin, as well as helping to relieve the itching associated with eczema. Bathing has been a significant problem until now, as my boyfriend hates to spend a prolonged period of time in water - it dries the skin and leaves it feeling worse than before. However, this gives him the option of actually soaking in a relaxing bath for the first time in his life.
4. Intensive Body Lotion (£16.00)
Great for use all over the body, both morning and night, this is light and easily absorbed but still helps to soothe the skin's surface. It's a good every day product to help maintain skin look good between flare ups, as well as applying after taking a shower. A great product to have within your skin care reportoire.
5. Intensive Treatment Cream (£13.50)
Suitable for daily use, this thick cream helps to treat extremely dry, itchy, flaky skin areas. It smoothes and protects extremely dry skin that requires intensive moisturisation - especially if the surface is cracked. This is great for areas that are seriously suffering and need an extra hit of something to help; thanks to the 10% Urea it really helps to hydrate and repair the skin.
If you're suffering from eczema, I would highly recommend minimising any steriod creams and taking fish oil supplements to increase the ability of the skin to repair itself naturally before you undertake a new skincare routine. However, if you're in need of some supportive and targeted products that can really make a difference, Eucerin is definitely a brand you can turn to for support.
