When Max Factor launched its False Lash Effect mascara it instantly became one the best selling products of all time. Years later it still appears in makeup bags across the world, so could Max Factor's latest innovation trump the original big volume mascara? Excess Volume Extreme Impact Mascara is a double ended product that contains a plastic brush on one end, to great extreme volume, and a traditional brush on the other, to create a jet black lacquer finish. They claim that these two layers together create an unrivaled voluminous look that will have you taking selfies all night long. I've been putting it to the test and am happy to report it's actually really quite good!

I love big lashes, lots of volume, super length and separation to create a doll-eyed result. This double-ended mascara delivers on all of those, creating a show stopping result that outperforms the original False Lash Effect by miles. The plastic brush helps to create a little volume at the root, but you do need to build up the layers to really create the illusion of more lashes; around three layers for me does the trick. The lacquer layer doesn't really add anything more in terms of colour (as the first layer is black enough already,) but it does help to finish the lashes by lifting and separating them further. Although this doesn't really create a huge amount of length, it does leave lashes looking Saturday-Night-Ready and looks great with a smokey eye.

My major issue with this mascara though is how fiddly it is to use. Due to the nature of the double-ended wand, there's not a huge amount of space to grip the base and manoeuvre the brushes around - particularly around the inner corners of the eye. It takes a little practice to get it right and to work out how best to apply the mascara without ending up with it covering your eyelid. Although this doesn't stand up against my ultimate YSL Babydoll mascara, as it's half the price it's definitely worth an investigatory purchase. I struggle with a lot of High Street mascaras, but this is certainly the best I've tried in a long time... It's just a shame the giant tube takes up so much room in my makeup bag!

The Max Factor Excess Volume, Extreme Impact Mascara is available now priced £12.99.
