‘A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting’ said Christian Dior. Spraying scent is more complex than we could have imagined when it hit the shelves of Selfridges over 100 years ago; picking a perfume is like picking personification bottled. I've always worn fragrance like I wear accessories, waiting until I'm fully dressed before picking a scent to complement my outfit and the mood I'm in. However, with the overflow of celebrity fragrances and endorsements, the art of perfumery has been somewhat lost. So many of us don't understand where our scent comes from, what the 'base' notes actually are, or what fragrance families underpin every scent ever developed. Karen Gilbert fell into the beauty industry by accident, finding herself training in perfumery and working on own label toiletries ranges for companies such as M&S, Boots & Superdrug; she later joined Neal's Yard Remedies and began specialising in aromatherapy oils, which led to her new career as an author of green and natural beauty books. 'Perfume' is a must-have companion for any fragrance enthusiast or beauty lover, and I have a copy to give away on day eleven of #LBQAdvent!
