Saving The Pennies: DIY Beauty

It's no secret that the cost of beauty products can seriously add up. From creams and lotions, to powders and serums, it's so easy for your money to run away from you and end up stashed in your make-up bag. I'm an avid beauty fan, but I'm also a big fan of getting jazzed up and taking myself out for the night – so I try to save wherever I can. Like most things in life, a few simple tips and tricks can help you save a packet on beauty products... A lot of them are simply lurking in your kitchen cupboard or are easy to pick up at your local supermarket.

If I think about it seriously and I'm honest with myself, most of my money seems to go on hair products – you can probably tell I am obsessed! From taming frizziness, creating volume and body, or simply just keeping a healthy shine, hair maintenance takes both hard work and quite a few pennies from your bank account. I find a deep conditioning treatment once a week is the key to keeping my hair happy and healthy, but these can often be costly. Creating a nourishing hair mask is super easy: combine one egg yolk, one tablespoon of mayonnaise, ¼ of an avocado, two tablespoons of olive oil and a small handful of conditioner. Plaster on your hair for an hour or two, then rinse for super smooth and silky locks.

As we've mentioned previously, lips take a real battering at this time of year. While keeping them moisturised is essential, a little exfoliation can also really go a long way. Either use an old toothbrush to gently remove the dry skin, or create your own with one tablespoon of white sugar, one tablespoon of olive oil and one tablespoon of honey. Let the exfoliator sit on your lips for around 10 minutes, then rinse off for an ultra kissable pout. For a refreshing and plumping gloss without the price tag, just add a few drops of peppermint oil to lipglosses you already own and enjoy the uplifting results when you apply.

It's really easy to make your own deodorant at home too. Though it's not something that seems like a big cost, making it at home is even cheaper. Combine three tablespoons of melted coconut oil (available at Holland and Barrett or similar stores) with three tablespoons of baking powder, two tablespoons of melted shea butter and your favourite essential oils. Pour it into a glass pot to keep, or put it in an old deodorant stick for easy application if you prefer. Once it sets you're ready to go - sweet smelling simplicity.

My other favourite top tips for DIY beauty include applying a touch of evening primrose oil to spots to help them heal, while rubbing lemon peel on nail varnish stains (those pesky bits you always end up smudging on the cuticles) can clear up any unfortunate mess.
