From shampooing our hair to painting our nails, mundane and routine tasks may seem impossible to get wrong - but the simple things in life really can cause the most discomfort if we don't pay attention to the processes we're undertaking. Shaving off excess or unwanted hair definitely comes under that banner, and is even more of an issue as summer approaches. How many times have you cut yourself with a blunt razor, suffered with redness or felt yourself itching dry limbs after your regular hair removal session? It's important to look after our bits and pieces pre, post and during shaving so our skin is left in the most beautiful of conditions; a few changes to your routine can revolutionise the results you see and allow you to step out with confidence. If you're wondering what you can do to make a real difference, then I've broken down my top tips for achieving the perfect shave every time... Just in time for bikini season!

REGULARLY EXFOLIATE
You don't want to clog up your razor with dead skin cells, so regular exfoliation is key to ensuring you're removing stubble and stubble alone. Exfoliating with a sugar scrub can also help to ensure your skin is in great condition, preventing ingrowing hairs or blocked pores that can also be troublesome when in contact with a razor blade. Massage in a small amount pre-shave, ensuring you wash away any residue thoroughly before getting out the razor.
CHANGE UP YOUR RAZOR BLADE
Using fresh, clean and sharp razors isn't just important in the prevention of cuts and stubble, but it's vitally important to ensure the health of our skin too. Bacteria on old razor blades has been linked to skin irritation and inflammation of the hair follicle, while ingrown hairs are linked to blunt blades that are unable to shave away the full hair. It's reported that roughly 60% of women experience health concerns due to shaving, while 75% experience irritation; changing your razor blade every few times you shave is vitally important not only for efficacy, but for your skin health too.
EMBRACE THE HEAT
For a closer shave and more comfortable result, make sure it's last thing you do in the shower; this allows the heat from the water to open pores and soften the hair, ensuring the blades are most effective. It also helps to prevent ingrown hairs and leaves skin feeling fresh. (Any excuse to stay in the shower for longer eh!)
USE A SHAVING CREAM
A great lubricant is essential for a smooth result; if you've ever thought it was a good idea to dry shave, then you'll know well enough to never do it again! Skip the irritating (and sometimes stingy) shaving foam in favour of something gentler and specifically designed to soothe the intimate area - such as Femfresh 2 in 1 Shower & Shave Cream (£3.99) which includes ingredients such as argan and sweet almond oil to help nourish without irritating. Lather it up a little and massage it onto skin, letting the ingredients do the hard work for you.
SMALL, GENTLE STROKES
If you're tempted to shave your legs with long strokes from ankle to thigh, it may be worth changing up in favour of small and gentle strokes in the direction of hair growth. This provides more control over the process and more refined results as a result. Long strokes can mean you miss key areas, as well as losing control over the blade and increasing the likelihood of a nip. Who says patience doesn't pay off?
POST SHAVE BALM
If you're shaving more intimate areas (including armpits and your bikini line,) then it's always a good idea to replenish lost moisture and soothe the area with a product that's been designed to work specifically with this area of the body. Femfresh Post Shave Balm (£3.99) is enriched with blackcurrant oil to soothe, aloe vera to calm and sweet almond oil to moisturise the intimate areas - as well as helping to reduce redness, minimise ingrown hairs and keeping skin smoother for longer. Massage a small amount onto clean and dry skin after every shave.
If you're interested in finding out more about Femfresh, then it's a soap free, hypoallergenic, pH balanced, dermatologically and a gynaecologically tested range of products that work in harmony with our bodies. Formulated by experts to care for intimate skin without disturbing your delicate pH balance, their two shaving accompaniments are the newest addition to the range and really help to provide superior results.
Femfresh 2 in 1 Shower & Shave Cream
Developed to help reduce irritation, redness and those annoying red bumps, this lightweight creamy balm can be used instead of shaving foam or your usual body wash. Featuring ingredients such as argan and sweet almond oil, it helps to nourish the skin without irritating the intimate areas. If you're prone to shaving off some of your lady garden, this is a great alternative that actually helps to instantly soothe while providing long term benefits too. In a consumer trial 86%* agreed that the product helped to minimise shaving rash, while 83%* agreed that it helped to reduce redness around the bikini line; 83%* also agreed that their bikini line stayed smoother for longer versus their usual product. It can be used as an intimate wash, an intimate shaving cream or all over the body too.
Femfresh Post Shave Balm
Enriched with blackcurrant oil to soothe, aloe vera to calm and sweet almond oil to moisturise, this balm is a beaut to use - so much so that I've been using it on my cuticles! It absorbs super quickly into skin to leave it feeling nourished, but silky smooth within seconds; there's no residue, stickiness or texture to worry about, just healthy skin that's touchably soft. During consumer testing 98%* agreed that the balm was soothing on their bikini line after hair removal, 86%* agreed it reduced redness and 80%* agreed the balm helped keep their intimate areas soother for longer after use. Although I haven't used it long enough to agree with those statistics, the outlook is positive!
Nobody need to step out with stubble (whether that's on your legs, pits or bits) so the next time you pick up the razor, take heed of my advice and enjoy a far superior finish.
