Why is it that tiny sized treats taste all the sweeter? Why are mini things all the more covetable than their regular counterparts? Is it because their nostalgic references remind us of our youth, or simply because their reduced size leaves room for even more impractical additions to our handbags? With clutches getting smaller, and our oversized bags often being replaced with more practical cross-body numbers, it's no surprise that cosmetics are following the same trend. New British brand Bagsy have created a whole line of cosmetics based cornering the mini market, while Benefit are as well known for their tiny sizes than they are their full-sized products (giving away previews with magazines is a sure fire way to generate much enthusiasm around a new launch.) Even Real Techniques, Bobbi Brown and Makeup Revolution have launched cosmetics brushes in tiny sizes, knowing we're likely to buy the original versions too. So why are we so obsessed with mini things? Here are the five reasons that I can't get enough, and why the fascination won't be ending soon...
1. THEY'RE A GREAT WAY TO TEST-RUN
If you're not ready to make an investment in a full-sized product, then a mini is a great alternative that allows you to test-run its performance. Benefit are one of the best brands for offering up sample sizes as a way of hooking you in, while the aisles of Boots are overflowing with mini versions of some firm favourites. It doesn't feel so much of an investment when it only costs a few quid, but the pay-off could be that you've found a new daily essential.
2. THEY SAVE ROOM IN MY CLUTCH
Who wants to take a giant, heavy palette out with them on a Saturday night? For touch-ups on the go, mini versions are a saving grace; they mean I don't have to choose between a balm, gloss and lipstick as they're all going to fit! Bagsy are great for little products that still ooze glamour - because practically shouldn't mean we have to compromise on the way it makes us feel.
3. THEY FEEL LIKE A TREAT
Shopping makes us all feel good, but mini things are a great way to satisfy that need without breaking the bank. Their compact size, teeny features and lust-worthy packaging makes small makeup all the more exciting. I'm not one to take out a regular size compact and be in awe, but there's something about a small version that makes me want to play with it as if it was a hamster.
4. THEY'RE FAB FOR TRAVELING
Need I say more? In a world where our hand luggage allowance is getting smaller and smaller, mini sized products are a great way to keep yourself looking and feeling fabulous without compromise. Even if you pop away on a train for a weekend, little sizes are a great way to keep your case actually lift-able. What other way could you take a night cream, face mask, foot lotion and treatment peel with you for a two night break?
5. THEY'RE A LITTLE BIT COLLECTIBLE
There's a secret section of society that don't actually use their pretty makeup pieces - they just collect them. We all have those covetable products that we can't bear to acually use, and in my case they're more often than not the mini versions. I even have a giant glass jar in my bathroom where I put them all on display, occasionally going for a rummage to lift out a Jo Malone shower gel... And probably putting it back to use on a rainy day.
