There's something about Scandinavian culture that's just so ruddy cool. Effortless fashion, beautiful people, incredible homewares - and of course fabulous skincare. Neutrogena Norwegian Formula was inspired by Norwegian Fisherman, so it seems only right to celebrate that heritage by giving their best selling concentrated hand cream a festive makeover. This November the new limited edition Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream is set to become one of the must-have handbag essentials, not only because it provides immediate and lasting relief for dry hands, but because it's been given a beautiful new design thanks to the Oslo based design duo Darling Clementine. Famed for their fresh and distinctive illustrations, they've created a pretty Scandinavian design that embodies the brand's heritage as well as their own influences; the result is a super cute pack that you'll want to offer around to friends at any given opportunity, as well as a hardworking effective formula that will be your best friend this winter.
If you're not too familiar with the Neutrogena Norwegian Formula story, then let us set a scene. For generations Norwegian fisherman have been pulling fish from the ocean, while facing some of the harshest, coldest and most extreme weather on Earth; under these conditions they developed a powerfully concentrated glycerin-rich recipe that relieved and protected their intensely dry, chapped hands like nothing else. Inspired by these truly effective concoctions, Neutrogena got to work with a team of dermatologists to create their own effective cream that was ideal for dry skin. In 1972 they launched their Norwegian formula; today it's a global best seller that's loved by millions thanks to its high glycerin concentration (the ingredient that attracts water.)
The formula itself is quite different from what you may be used to, having been concentrated to provide up to 200 applications in one of these little tubes. You need only a pea sized amount to soothe both hands, the rich formula getting to work instantly to hydrate and protect; it does take a few seconds for the cream to absorb (be patient,) but the result is beautifully soft hands and absolutely no residue. It's fabulous if you want to apply a touch of hand cream while working at your computer (no sticky keys,) or before putting on your gloves (no clammy struggles to get your fingers in) or even between swipes of your smartphone (no screen smudges.) Plus, when it looks this good it's hard not to justify.
Of the design itself, Darling Clementine say: "We were inspired by Norwegian cross stitch and handi craft (the classic winter jumper motif,) by snowflakes and their intricate patterns, and by Scandinavian woodland scenery. The final design contains cues from all three inspirations, with typical Nordic icons (the wooden cabin, gingerbread, reindeer, snow and mountains) drawn in. It was a very natural development, and one that feels very Darling Clementine." I really like the fact it fits perfectly with the natural colours and style of Neutrogena's much loved hand cream, while adding something a little bit kitsch into the mix; it's a sprinkling of Scandinavia while still appealing to our British sense of style. At £3.90, you'll be hard pressed to find a reason not to pick one of these up while you can... They'll make the perfect stocking filler for Christmas too!
