The Shades Of Autumn: New Launches From Illamasqua To Tickle Your Tastebuds

Although I love tones that slip effortlessly into my routine, I also like to be challenged into using colours I wouldn't normally opt for. We all know how to use a nude, a taupey-brown or a smokey grey, but if presented with a khaki or burnt orange would you run away or embrace the new? Illamasqua are so well known for their crazy shades and unusual textures, but for Autumn they've created a collection which embraces their heritage while providing a really wearable portfolio. Mixed in with pure pigments of silver and gold are the earthy tones of terracotta and molten metal, with a flash of deep browny-red on the lips. You may look at this collection and think it somewhat unwearable, but the result is actually perfect for the new season; the usual tones are boosted with the unexpected - this is Autumn with a little something new.

The 'Nomadic' eyeshadow palette (£34.00) includes a beautiful silky greige that can be used all over the lid, a dark green khaki to fill in the lower lid and a silvery grey to create a smokey effect. However, if you swap in the bold terracotta shade then you'll be perfectly on-trend whilst embracing a slightly warmer tone. This Autumn is all about burnt oranges, dirty yellows and 1970's fashion - so this actually provides a really subtle way to update your makeup bag. Don't feel the pressure to use all the shades at once (as that's where it will all go wrong,) but mixing and matching will provide you with unexpectedly wearable and modern results.

The pure pigments (£17.00) have been incredibly popular already, but these slightly metallic (Draco and Ara) subtle shades are perfect for transitioning from the no-makeup-makeup look of summer, to the heavier smokey result of winter. Apply them all over the lid, mix with a touch of water for a more intense result, or use them as a subtle highlighter just under the brow line. Even the bold 'brick red' tone of the Glamore Lipstick in Kin (£19.50) is incredibly wearable; the warmer undertone makes it perfect for the colder months when our complexions are paler and need a little boost. Comfortable, richly pigmented and long-lasting - the perfect formula for even the driest of lips.

Although not actually part of this Autumnal collection, this little tube of golden flecks is well worth a mention too. Hitting stores from October, it's actually part of the Christmas look and will be utterly gorgeous come the party season. The transparent gel holds flecks of golden shimmer in different sizes; when it dries it leaves a completely crisp-free finish that just glimmers in the light; apply it to eyes, lips, cheeks or draw giant stars on your face - the choice is yours. Watch out for it, because it's limited edition and sure to be in demand.

I'm loving the fact that Illamasqua are trying to reach a new kind of customer of late via shades that are much more wearable and 'realistic' on a daily basis, while still keeping hold of their heritage and embracing the unexpected. This collection illustrates that perfectly; there's a little something for everyone, while being totally on-trend for the colour palette of Autumn. If you see me rocking a terracotta eye and a sparkly cheek, you know it's all down to Illamasqua.
