Looking after your barnet can be troublesome, time consuming and confusing. With so many products to choose from (all claiming to give us the hair of a Kardashian,) it's hard to understand what we should be looking out for and what will really help us in the follicle department. Although there are tonnes of volumising shampoos, miracle growth serums and treatments that claim to repair all the damage ever done by hair straighteners in only eight minutes, there are actually loads of surprising things that are great for our hair and much more accessible. All you have to do is open a cupboard, look in the fridge or take a step into your bathroom and your locks could be looking fabulous in no time. Here are my top five surprising things that are great for your hair.
Brown Sugar
When mixed with olive oil, brown sugar works as an amazing treatment to help hydrate and smooth hair while leaving it feeling super soft; you can also use the same mixture to exfoliate your limbs while waiting for it to get to work! It can also be mixed with water and sprayed on to replace hairspray, providing great hold without any sticky residue; who knew something so readily available and cheap could be used in so many ways?
Coffee
A recent study found that caffeine prolongs the growth cycle of hair by blocking the hormone responsible for damaged follicles and hair loss. Not only that, but female hair follicles were found to be more sensitive and responsive to caffeine than male ones - bonus. Although you'd have to consume upwards of fifty cups a day to see an effect (not recommended!) it does show that products containing caffiene could really help your hair in the long-term. Latte anyone?
Cold Showers
You may not want to try this every day, but a blast of cold water over your hair in the morning will help to create a super smooth and shiny finish when it's dried. The cold temperature helps hair cuticles to flatten, providing not only a super smooth feeling but helping to reflect the light and create a shiny result. There's a reason why top hairdressers will offer you a blast of cold water at the end of your treatment... Because it really does work!
Avocado
Using an avocado as a conditioning treatment or masque can really help to nourish dry hair, while preventing hair loss or natural 'churn' - the daily loss that's perfectly normal. High in Vitamins B and E, avocados work at a cellular level to help protect and strengthen hair by providing an injection of goodness that may be lacking after excessive styling or dying. Mash up an avocado and apply to hair after shampooing once a week for a fab finish.
Baking Soda
If you're disillusioned with dry shampoos, then baking soda can offer a more natural alternative. When applied to roots it helps to absorb excess oil, leaving hair feeling much softer and full of bounce; there's a lot less of that 'chalky' feeling and it's way cheaper than a posh can of dry shampoo that promises to revitalise hair without any residue.
Are there any surprising things lurking in your kitchen cupboards that help to achieve the soft, bouncy and shiny hair you always dreamt of? Let me know if you have any top picks to add to mine!
