One of the most hated beauty related tasks any woman has to undertake is a visit to the hairdresser. Although it's supposed to be enjoyable, relaxing and leave you feeling like a million bucks, that lingering appointment can cause beads of sweat and the feeling of dread. There's nothing worse than asking for a trim and coming out with a pixie crop, or requesting subtle highlights and the result being chunky bleached sections that wouldn't be out of place in 1992; it's so hard to find a hairdresser that you trust, that understands you and listens to requests while providing recommendations and input. However, over the last year I've managed to find five fab salons that I would return to without question for everything from a restyle to a quick blowdry - here are my top five picks of the best places to get your hair done in London.
1. Gielly Green
Located a short walk from Baker Street station in the heart of Marylebone, Gielly Green is also handily located around the corner from the Chiltern Firehouse - so you can pop in for a quick cocktail to show of your 'do on the way home. The staff are incredibly friendly, helpful and caring, really listening to your requests and taking the time to perfect your 'do. Their salon also includes to most incredible backwash chairs which lay you completely flat to avoid that crooked neck feeling that often happens after a wash... You could find yourself having a cheeky snooze during a head massage.
2. Michael Van Clarke
A firm favoruite with London's bloggers, journalists and celebrities, you can experience their unique 'diamond cut' which is constructed on dry hair to ensure a perfect finish. After visiting oodles of salons that left me with the opposite of what I'd asked for, my first experience at Michael Van Clarke was a godsend. My stylist Gustav really listened to my issues and concerns, providing me with a solution that not only ensured my hair looked fab when I stepped out of the salon, but had a plan of action for the following six months.
3. Aveda Institute
I love visiting this hive of activity not only for the hair services, but for their beauty treatments too. There's always someone free to spend quality time on your hair, helping to teach you maintenance and blowdry techniques while you're in the chair so you can keep it looking great between visits. If you're concerned about chemicals in your hair products, then you can even get completely natural dyes that provide a super shiny colour result that lasts.
4. Hershesons, Harvey Nicols
I had my hair completely restyled and dyed a bright shade of red in this salon, visiting a few times to ensure the finished result was just right. I was not only impressed by the care and attention of the stylists, but the fact they all talk to eachother and come up with a creative solution that encompasses both colour and style - ensuring the result is flawless. It's always great when you feel in safe hands when you're undertaking such a dramatic and drastic hair overhaul.
5. Errol Douglas
I've spent more time in Errol's salon than any other in London and I always know I'm in for a great experience. They've dyed, cut and blowdried my hair on multiple occasions, as well as fitting my most recent set of extensions. Again, I love how the stylists and colourists talk together and spend time coming up with a solution that ticks all the boxes; on my most recent visit two lovely ladies spent five hours dying and re-dying my hair to ensure a perfect result. You can't ask much more than that!
