Although incredibly convenient, the simple face wipe has to be my most hated invention ever. When they first hit the shelves of Boots they were something of a revelation, completely changing the skincare market and the daily routine of women across the world. I for one stocked up by the packet-load and spent many years using them to remove my makeup before bed... Before I realised they were causing more problems than they were solving. By their nature they're soaked in all kinds of chemicals to keep them moist for a long period of time, which are incredibly drying and sometimes damaging to skin. If you're suffering from skin issues, then look first at whether or not you're using face wipes and how they fit into your daily routine; I bet you a facial that they're causing you all sorts of problems without you realising. Your face is a delicate flower that needs to be watered and tendered to in the right way, but face wipes cause us to be lazy and scrap the routine that has been preached to us since we were teenagers: cleanse, tone and moisturise. A face wipe will only remove the makeup and dirt that is visible on the surface; it will not remove the dirt and makeup that's sitting within the upper layers of skin, causing spots, irritation and blocked pores. The perfect experiment to illustrate how utterly useless face wipes are is to wipe your face as you would normally, then taking a cleanser and toner to skin to really remove the nastiness - the horrific amount of dirt, grime, makeup and grease that comes away from your skin will have you dumping the face wipes for good. Don't get me wrong, face wipes have their function in life (I'm talking 3am after the pub and festivals when you're living out of a tent,) but on the whole they should be kept as a last resort rather than the crutch we lean on daily. Start a new month with a new routine, and make that routine based on cleansing, toning, exfoliating and moisturising your skin... Your face will thank you for it.
