With all the innovations that hit the beauty industry and scientific advances creating what was previously only dreamed of, one of the few items remaining humble and simplistic is the hair brush... Until now. Because a straightforward wooden handle with bristles isn't quite enough, Braun have invented an electric brush that emits active ions directly onto the hair's surface. The Satin-Hair 7 brush includes an ion jet, which releases millions of active ions every time you use it, creating an invisible 'power halo' around your hair. Braun claim that active ions work 'very much like a conditioner' to tame frizz and provide smoothness that's incomparable to regular brushes. Active ions are atoms that carry a negative electric charge and actively envelop the hair strands to help fight static, transport moisture back inside the hair shaft and restore shine. The result, theoretically, is boosted shine and easier hairstyling - so how did this fancy pants brush hold up?

The brush is incredibly easy to use as you just push a button and it's ready to go; there's no noticeable effect, sound or feeling as the ions are basically undetectable. The only change in the brush is that a green light flashes on and the ion jet's cover is released, which emits an electric charge - just be careful not to touch it as I have given myself an electric shock on multiple occasions while half asleep pre-coffee! The brush itself is quite chunky, featuring a thick cushioned pad and plastic bristles which remind me of retro brushes I had as a kid; considering this is quite technical I'm a little disappointed they didn't make it look and feel a bit more swish.
Because of the plastic bristles I prefer to use this after I've combed wet hair with a lighter brush and rough dried with my hairdryer, turning the Braun brush on and using it to style and calm frizz. I definitely notice a difference in the texture of my hair after using it, the surface becoming smoother and softer - as well as a significant reduction in that 'frizz halo' that often appears above the surface of hair. Although you do still need to use decent hair styling products and take your time to remove excess moisture, this has added a little extra smoothing action to my routine without the need for further time. In an ideal world the brush would be prettier, slimmer and lighter to hold, but I'm sure this is just the first in a flurry of similar electric brushes to hit the market.
Unfortunately the brush can't really be used to style hair because of its shape and weight, meaning this is an additional prodcut to use, but it definitely makes a difference. It's not overly expensive either, being available for £28.99, meaning you could happily give it a go without sacrificing a kidney to pay for it. I love an innovation and this definitely delivers; it's just a shame they didn't design it to look like something out of Star Trek. Would you ever try an electric hairbrush?
