Over twenty years ago, a little known shoe designer named Christian Louboutin received the prototype of his first stiletto. The bright yellow shoe was inspired by the pop art movement and featured a giant statement flower on the buckle, but Christian still felt it was missing something. After looking over at his assistant (who was sat at her desk painting her nails,) he realised that something was a flash of red; after applying her polish to the sole of the shoe, the brand we know so well was born. Louboutin shoes are loved by women across the globe, so it's no surprise that the brand is expanding into beauty to celebrate the simple inspiration that started it all. "The red sole was born from red nail polish. I am giving back to nails what the shoe took from the nails, many years ago," Christian says. And so Christian Louboutin Beaute was established.
Christian Louboutin's first move out of the shoe arena has been greeted with much applause already, but until you see the bottle for yourself you simply can't appreciate how much of a work of art these bottles of polish are. The glass bottle is designed to hold the iconic red colour (which perfectly matches the sole of the famous Louboutin shoes) 'in space', with an ombre effect displaying the varnish colour in an intriguing and unique way. The unusual and statement lid has been designed to be the exact height as Christian Louboutin's famous ballet pumps, which were created as part of a photography collaboration and are the highest heels ever made.
Initially the iconic red shade will be launched, with three further collections following later this year - including nudes, noirs and pops (which are bright colours inspired by some of his famous collections and creations.) Interestingly these won't be stocked in a traditional way in beauty halls, but sold from the shoe department and Christian Louboutin concessions nationwide; the polishes will definitely be snapped up by existing customers and lovers of the brand who can't quite justify over £500 for a pair of patent black peep-toes. At £36.00 the polish isn't cheap (and may possibly be the most expensive nail product I've ever come across,) but it's an absolute lustworthy piece of dressing table candy - these were meant to be seen, not hidden away in a drawer.
I'm currently wearing the iconic red shade and have to admit it's truly beautiful. It's incredibly pigmented (you get a flawless result in only one stroke,) and dries to leave an impeccable glossy finish. The brush is designed to aid application and layer the product on gradually, preventing a thick finish that encourages air bubbles and causes the polish to lift. Although I can't testiment to the longevity just yet, I've no doubt that these will fly out and become a collectors item in years to come. Christian Louboutin has huge plans for the beauty side of his business, even launching a stand-alone beauty store in Paris later in 2014, and this is a fabulous first step.
