Wind and cold temperatures can play havoc with the surface of your lips, causing dry and flaky skin that can become uncomfortable and even painful. The primary purpose of lip balm is to help seal moisture into lips and protect them from external exposure. Wind, cold temperatures, and air conditioning all have a drying effect on skin by drawing moisture away from the body; lips are particularly vulnerable because the skin is so thin. 1. Burt's Bees Nourishing Lip Balm (£3.75)
This natural lip balm is loaded with coconut and sunflower oils, as well as being rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids, to nourish, condition and soften lips. The ethically sourced beeswax seals in hydration, as well as providing extra lubrication for sore and chapped lips. The original version contains a hint of peppermint, but you can also choose from other flavours including mango and acai berry for a subtle fruity hit. I have about ten of these in my collection and it's the one balm I always recommend to girls and guys alike.

Although I'm a little late to the party, this little tube of 100% natural lanolin provides lips with soothing relief when they need it most. The ultimate lipbalm for many, Carmex haven't changed their formula in years. Available in little pots and tubes, the rich balm helps to alleviate dry lips while adding a touch of gloss. The tingling sensation of the menthol helps to cool sore pouts, although when used excessively can cause irritation - so make sure you don't overdo it! It also contains nourishing butters to moisturise the lips while SPF15 protects from any UV damage, making it the perfect handy lipbalm for all year round.
