When it comes to my lifestyle and skincare routine I always prefer to keep things as organic and natural as possible – did you know 60-70% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream? The trouble with organic is you can never guarantee whether a particular ingredient will have a good harvest (it’s not like churning out chemicals at the press of a button;) and this makes organic skincare and food expensive. When it comes to skincare, I use organically derived for the products I use most frequently and that stay sitting on the skin. You can get away with using non-organic exfoliants, cleansers and shampoos, but considering skin is our largest organ, using organic creams and masks can significantly reduce your chemical count. Here are my top picks of organically derived skincare products that are worth the investment.
The Organic Pharmacy Double Rose Rejuvenating Face Cream (£37.96)
This is a really light moisturiser and makes my skin feel really hydrated and healthy. The consistency is quite thick but it never feels heavy and absorbs well into the skin. My only criticism is it doesn’t contain SPF, so this isn’t suitable for day use alone, but for an intense treatment I like to apply a very thick layer overnight; and be sure to have SPF in your foundation or BB cream if you wear it during the day.
Dr Organic Dead Sea Mineral Bio-Plasma Mud Mask (£7.99)
Mud masks are great for oily skin, and although I’m lucky and don’t tend to suffer from this, I still like to use this mask once a week to regulate oil production and for a deep pore cleanse. Whenever applying a cream or a mask, so much of the performance comes down to taking the time to properly massage in the product to boost circulation. Apply this using light pressure in a circular, upward motion for best results. If you suffer from oily skin I recommend you apply this twice a week and allow the product to soak in for a good ten minutes.
B Organic Very Berry Lip Balm (£5.50)
I love this non-greasy formula as it leaves my lips so hydrated and soft. The raspberry/strawberry smell is a tad sickly for me but it leaves my lips so nourished I put up with it! Lip balms sit on your lips for several hours and are easily absorbed into the blood stream (especially if you lick your lips a lot!) so for £5.50 I recommend you invest in an organic lip product.
My Pure Biologika Lavender Fields Deodorant (£7.99)
I always find roll-on deodorants the most effective and I love the ‘certified organic’ status of this product (meaning it has been declared organic by a certifying body). This is the best aluminium-free deodorant I’ve ever used and it really helps to treat sweating rather than just masking the odour. The lavender scent is a little strong but fads quickly, leaving a really effective product behind.
If like me you can’t afford to go organic on everything, try to avoid some nasty ingredients – propylene glycol, PEGs, SLS and parabens. It’s also worth noting that some organic ingredients don’t mix well with some preservatives, which is why non-organic stabilisers are often added; look out for EcoCert or Soil Association logos which means their toxicity has been tested and the product is not harmful. Do you have any favourite organic products?
