If used incorrectly, hair oils have a tendency to make hair look greasy. However, in my opinion nothing can replace them for their nourishing and heat protecting properties – sprays don’t give enough coverage and creams can make hair heavy. I’ve rounded up my personal favourite products that provide all the hydrating and strengthening properties you expect from oils, with no grease.
MoroccanOil Treatment (£12.85)
If I’ve got the time, I like to apply this generously and massage into my roots; I then wrap my hair up in a warm towel and leave for a 20 minute intensive treatment. For everyday use, simply apply a pea sized amount to damp hair and rub in gently, being sure to evenly spread throughout your hair. As the name suggests, this is a treatment oil so is great for strengthening and hydrating hair; if (like me) you have long, thick hair this works wonders as a detangler too! However, it’s too oily to apply to dry hair and I would never use this to tame fly-aways - it's just too heavy.
Ojon Rare Blend Oil Total Hair Therapy (£30.00)
It may not come cheap, but this hair therapy is worth every penny as a tiny drop goes a long way. My hair always feels so healthy after this treatment, which helps to make it feel super soft, smooth and glossy. Even though it’s an oil, the consistency isn’t very ‘oily’ so I often apply to dry hair when I feel it needs an extra boost; it's so light, I even apply it around my face for taming fly-aways.
Percy & Reed Smoothed, Sealed and Sensational No Oil Oil (£14.00)
Although this is an oil formula, it’s in a spray format - so you get all the benefits of an oil, without the temptation to over-apply; just be sure you apply liberally enough to cover all your hair. This is my go-to heat protecting product and is great for calming frizz without weighing down the hair. I like to apply to the palm of my hand and rub to gently heat the oil, before applying to my hair and brushing through – it’s a great way to guarantee even coverage as it’s easy to just focus on the roots.
Schwarzkopf Got2b Oil-Licious Tame & Shine Styling Oil (£2.80)
For times when I don’t have the budget to splurge on fancy hair products, this is a great budget compromise. It doesn’t strengthen and nourish hair as well as more expensive leave-in treatments, but a little amount does add shine and it’s surprisingly non-greasy for such an affordable product.
Oils make such great intensive treatments and only need to be applied once a week to get the benefits; and I would suggest even less often if your hair is naturally oily. The best ways to avoid hair getting greasy is to apply small amounts to damp hair, gradually adding more once you’ve got to grips with the consistency, being careful not to apply too much near the roots. Sometimes you get what you pay for with beauty so try to invest in slightly more expensive brands and remember a little goes a long way – the Ojon treatment has lasted me well over a year.
