Summer is well and truly upon us, even though it might not feel it at times! So to celebrate the long BBQ filled nights and bikini clad days, it's the perfect opportunity to shake up what's in your make-up bag. A trend that is dominating the runways this season is pink and embracing it can breathe some much needed life into a tired make-up routine. A little worried of embracing pink? Just take a look at the hoards of brands that will see you overhauling your collection and wearing makeup like it's the 90s again! Donna Karen was seen using a mixture of pink lashes and eyeliner to cover two of the big trends for this summer: paired with a light brow and nude lips it's one of the most striking looks of the season. If that's too overstated for your tastes, Versace have been rocking the natural 'concealer only' look which I've been trying to imitate in the warmer weather in order to save my skin. A little tinted moisturiser and the palest of pink on the lips is the simplest way to wear this trend, whilst staying natural and radiant. With this approach it's ideal to stick with a matte complexion and steer away from dewy skin, ensuring the pink pops and remains the focus.
Picking the right pink: With your chosen look in mind, it's important to note that not all pinks suit all skin tones. Those with fair skin should stick to the adage of 'lighter is better' as any colour is going to stand out against porcelain skin. For the medium-toned lady, a rosy pink is preferable - too light and your skin starts to look washed out, whilst too dark can leave you looking like a china doll. Lastly, for dark skinned beauties avoid the pastel pinks and reach for a pure rose colour that will work wonders to bring out the natural qualities in your skin.
Blushing blusher: The best way to get that pinky flushed post-sun glow is to opt for a light sweeping of cream blush. An easy to wear colour is Bourjois' offering in Rose Tender. Depending on how you like to wear blush, build it up using an angled brush, tapping off any excess before buffing into the apples of your cheeks and blending toward the temples. Work deftly and precisely, but if you do get too much product build up you can save yourself starting over by rolling a beauty blender across the surface (or transluscent powder.)
Hot lips: Lips are fast becoming the best way to showcase the colour of the season, so a slick of your preferred shade will work wonders at making your eyes pop. If you've gone for subtle blush, you can push the boat out with a bright pink lip to draw the eye in to your pout. One I've been reaching for recently is Mac's 'Viva Glam Nicki', which has a satin finish and gets no end of compliments. If you're not quite as brave, a lighter lip colour such as Topshop's Lip Stick in Coy will give you the edge you're looking for without being quite so daring. Don't worry if you get the fade from the centre of your lips, this is very on-trend, so the natural progression throughout the day brings you further into the beauty fold. Perfect!
Getting it nailed: We can't forget one of our best accessories: our nails. Experimentation with several shades of pink is key here, and two such shades that are made for each other are Ciaté's Cupcake Queen and Cutie Pie. Why not try out a new take on a french manicure or having one feature nail? Don't forget to give yourself a pedicure as well, all those days spent in flip-flops means our toes have to be in tip top condition too.
A full face of pink products isn't something to shy away from; you can pull it off by adjusting each shade to complement or work with another. If you're not a fan of hot pink, styling your cheeks, lips and eyes with a sugar light pastel pink can ensure you stay on trend without sacrificing your dignity. You could even go minimal with a flash of neon pink against an otherwise nude complexion, another massive trend for the summer! What are your favourite pink trends? Will you be fashioning pink this summer?
