Feeling Like A Waterbaby & Scuba-Diving In Antigua: An Unforgettable Trip On A Catamaran

 

I've always been a bit of a water baby and continually long to be beside the sea, but until recently I didn't know how much I would also adore snorkeling. I first experienced it in Florida at Discovery Cove and the Disney waterparks, but it was a controlled environment that simply can't compare to the open ocean. After we'd arrived at Green Island we popped on our flippers and masks, jumped off the edge of the catamaran and looked down in the depths to see some of the most beautiful tropical fish you can imagine. My Go-Pro can't do them justice (and the water was quite dark so didn't pick up the small fish as well as I would have liked,) but they didn't seem bothered at all by humans invading their space: they just carried on swimming around in their schools. Our captain and guide got in on the action too, diving deep down to show us everything from a lobster to coral and point out fish as they swam on by. 

Although we didn't see any turtles in the ocean, we did spot a couple of tiny ones on the beach when we disembarked after lunch to explore the local area. To experience an Antiguan island that's been untouched by resorts or tourists was something special, and I spent the longest time searching for shells and trinkets while taking in the local wildlife. (We found a few odd looking things in shells that apparently bite, so we backed away slowly and let them get on with their days!) The day passed far too quickly and before we knew it we were back on the catamaran and heading back to the resort; the view was vast, but it was amazing to see the sun set and the ocean change colour from bright blue to the most sensual of navy. We were even lucky enough to spot a rainbow on the horizon, which was the perfect end to a perfect day.
