It's amazing how quickly you can adopt a new regime and forget what it was ever like before; I'm certainly like that with night creams, feeling somewhat unprepared and unpampered for slumber unless I've coated my skin in a delicious oil or cream that I know will get to work as I sleep. Although you can use any number of your 'daytime' formulas during the night too, the main difference is that night creams are saturated with ingredients that work best over a longer period of time while the body is resting. The skin can focus on absorbing the goodness, rather than protecting itself from environmental aggressors, and do so without the interference of makeup; I personally use my nights to layer up all manner of concoctions to provide not only an emotive pampering experience, but to ensure I awake looking and feeling fresh - even when I'm not feeling it. Over the last few months I've been putting all number of products to the test, but these five are the ones I keep turning back to. Although not all of them are cheap as chips, your skin is a worthy investment and a great night time regime is always something I would recommend; if you ever wish away those dark circles and dull skin of a morning, turning to one of these could be the answer you're looking for.
1. Caudalie Reservatrol Night Infusion Cream (£39.00)
As a long-time fan of Caudalie, I'll happily apply anything with their brand name onto my face without question. It's not often I have that level of trust and faith in a brand, but they've simply never disappointed. This new Night Infusion Cream features their pioneering ingredient Resveratrol (which they've been using in their skincare since 1997,) which diminishes visible wrinkles and enhances skin firmness, with the same regenerating process that allows grape vines to live up to 100 years. Now I'm not saying I look like an old prune, but this incredibly rich and delicately scented cream is a pleasure to apply and definitely leaves my skin feeling fresh in the morning. It's just an added bonus that it helps to tackle those fine lines while I catch forty winks too!
2. Marks & Spencer Formula Absolute Ultimate Sleep Cream (£22.00)
You may be forgiven for overlooking or turning your nose up at M&S's own brand skin care - but you really are missing a trick. No longer is this range naff and only suited for your Nan at Christmas, but it's full of serious skincare that's clinically proven to transform skin without costing the earth. This overnight treatment claims to transform your skin with ten amazing benefits after just four weeks, but I can report back that after just one use I noticed a difference. Not only does it deeply hydrate and plump up skin (it appears less fatigued and fine lines are reduced, ) but I definitely feel like my complexion looks healthier and imperfections appear reduced; the result is brighter, radiant and smooth skin. With a claim like 'helps you look like you've had eight hours sleep, even when you haven't' I was a little dubious - but this is really a bargain buy that works.
3. The Body Shop Oils Of Life Sleeping Cream (£28.00)
This groundbreaking range from The Body Shop has been a firm favourite of mine since it launched a year ago, because it brings a touch of premium-esque technology (and the ingredients to match) into the mass market with a price point that doesn't make you wince. Featuring black cumin, rosehip, camellia, lavender, rosemary leaf, geranium, camomile and orange peel oils from across the globe, together they calm, promote radiance, revitalise, stimulate the production of elastin and collagen, prevent free radical damage, improve skin tone and are concentrated in antioxidants. Phew. In short, this lightweight gel-like texture soaks into skin almost immediately to get cracking with some serious skin repair. If you don't like the feeling of heavy creams or sticking to your pillow, then this is definitely one for you; it's great for transitioning into Autumn without layering too much, plus it's light enough to mix in a few drops of your face oil for a little overnight boost.
4. Liz Earle Superskin Overnight Mask (£42.00)
Over the years my beloved Liz Earle has become a little neglected in favour of other brands vying for my attention, but that doesn't mean their formulas are any less effective. This supersized (and therefore great value) pot hides a super luxurious and rich creamy texture that's still incredibly fluid, meaning it's much easier to apply and massage into skin. Featuring Persian silk tree to brighten, pomegranate flower to lift and firm, as well as buriti oil to help maintain natural moisture levels, this definitely helps to leave my skin feeling bright and ready for the day ahead. Although the initial results don't wow me, this is a luxurious experience that I know is injecting some goodness over time - and sometimes that's all you need.
5. Lancome Énergie de Vie Sleeping Mask (£42.00)
I've had this mask-slash-gel-cream for some time, and I didn't quite know how I felt about it. However, I found myself reaching for this more and more when I wanted to inject a touch of moisture without overloading or irritating my skin. The sorbet-esque texture was beautiful during the hot summer months, but it's also great as an accompaniment to other oils and treatments because of its lightweight nature. It melts instantly when it comes in contact with skin and apparently breaks into water droplets to plump up the surface in ten minutes; Lancome also recommend using this as an intense moisture treatment when layered on and removed with a tissue, but for £42.00 you’ll sure as hell want to get every possible last drop from it. Although I'm disappointed that there's no additional ingredients to really help tackle skincare issues, it's a delightful cream for those just wanting to keep it simple.
