Makeup brushes can be baffling. With so many shapes, styles and shades on offer, where do you start and how do you know what you *really* need versus what you *think* you need? It can be easy to keep stocking up on brushes in sets and only reaching for the ones that seem easy to use, but once you look beyond your usual fluffy powder and foundation brush there are a handful of helpful essentials that will leave your makeup looking professional and your application flawless. According to celebrity makeup artist Daniel Sandler, you can start with five game-changing brushes in your collection and build up from there. These are the tools that will really make a big difference and will help you become a pro in no time at all.
1. LIP BRUSH
Applying direct from the bullet is easy, but it never provides the precise look or perfected pout we aspire to. The secret is applying lipstick with a brush, lining the lips and then filling in with delicate strokes for longevity without overloading. Daniel says: "Look for a brush with a tapered, fine point to help you create perfect, showstopping lips." Although it may get messy if you're re-applying throughout the day, for bright red lips and dark statement colours it's worth the effort!

2. CONTOUR BRUSH
Contouring may have had it's moment in 2015, but that doesn't mean it still isn't a trend to get on board with. A contouring brush can help buff a darker shade into the contours of your cheeks, creating an illusion of a slimmer and more youthful face. Daniel recommends to "choose one that's angled so you can you chisel your features. The bristles shouldn't be too dense either, or you'll over-apply product." You don't want to overdo it and give the game away!

3. EYEBROW BRUSH
Your brows can open up the face and inject a sense of youthful style like no other form of makeup can; although pencils are great, for an expertly applied finish opt for a brow brush and a cream formula to fill in those gaps and create arches where there are none. Daniel suggests: "This should be angled and with medium stiff bristles, so they don't splay out like whiskers. You can also use the same brush to apply gel eyeliner - just make sure you clean it thoroughly between each application."

4. EYESHADOW BLENDING BRUSH
The secret to the perfect smokey look or expertly blended eye is all in the eyeshadow brush you opt for; a fluffy brush can help buff colour into eyes, blend away any over-application, contour into the crease and create the perfect base. Daniel says you should: "Look for something domed, very soft and fluffy so even the most novice user will feel that the brush is doing all the hard work." Once you find your perfect match, buy five and never be without your favourite tool!

5. FINE LINER/BLEMISH BRUSH
Daniel thinks everyone should own one of these "to create the most perfect feline flick or disguise blemishes. Choose one that has a fine point, almost like an artist's brush." Although it takes some getting used to, the liner brush can help create vintage looking and sexy flicks that no liner pen can compete with. Be sure to only pick up a small amount up at a time, building the product until you achieve the result you want. For blemishes, focus as much around the imperfection as over it to reduce redness and the look of inflammation.
