Creams, lotions and nourishing sprays may be fabulous at providing a temporary hit of hydration, but they often don't penetrate deep enough to tackle serious irritation and dryness at its source. If you've ever suffered from eczema, psorasis, rosacea or even a really bad irritation, you may also be aware that the ingredients in many potions aggravate the skin even more to leave it red and burning. Balms are often misunderstood and misused, but when integrated into a skincare regime or utilised in the way they were intended they can be an absolute skin savour. Little pots of solid grease may not seem like the ideal product to apply to your face or massage into sore spots, but once you get to grips with the benefits they can bring I promise you'll be converted. I've been using beauty and skin balms since I first visited the HerbFarmacy plot in rural Wales last year, even making my own using their homegrown and nurtured ingredients; since I arrived home laden down with little tubs, both my boyfriend and I have been reaching for them on a regular basis to help with niggling skin issues. Whether it's helping to soothe Josh's eczema, heal cuts and bruises, boost the suppleness of my skin or simply provide a little pamper, HerbFarmacy have totally got it covered.
Rather uniquely, the flowers used in all the HerbFarmacy products are still planted, nurtured and picked by hand on site. (Find out more by reading my post following my visit here.) To make the hand-poured balm products you see above, they're then dried and steeped in oil before being strained and mixed with waxes or emollients. What could have become an automated and functional process is still conducted with care, love and attention - which is why these little pots of balm are so special. Each one of the HerbFarmacy balms is packed full of hardworking, natural, British grown ingredients that will supercharge your regime and boost the effectiveness of other products. Although there are lots of different ones to choose from, my three personal picks include something for beauty, something for body and something for bad times. Together they offer a 100% natural way to care for yourself - and those that you love too.
Mallow Beauty Balm (£18.00)
Definitely the iconic product for those familiar with the brand, this deeply moisturising balm helps to hydrate, soften and protect the skin thanks to the addition of Marshmallow, Mullein, Jojoba and Shea Butter. Not only can it be used as an overnight treatment, face mask and morning boost, but it works beautifully as a pre-bedtime cleanse too. It may feel odd applying balm to your skin, but a little warmed between the fingers is all you need for a non-greasy and truly effective facial treat. Think of it as an alternative to facial oils and you're on the right track.
Skin Rescue Balm (£15.00)
A versatile solution to most skin issues, this is particularly beneficial in relieving the symptoms of eczema, skin irritation, redness and chaffing. It features soothing ingredients including Calendula, Chickweed, Marshamallow, Chamomile and Lavender to leave skin feeling repaired, without irritation. I recently suffered a period of incredible soreness on my leg that actually made it painful to walk; after trying every body cream within my reportoire, I swapped in a tub of this and it was healed completely within days. This is a firm favourite with Josh for treating flare ups of eczema, whilst it's even mild enough to use on little people.
Meadowsweet Muscle Balm (£15.00)
If you need something to ease tension, relieve aching muscles and soothe joints, then the Meadowsweet Muscle Balm is definitely for you. With Comfrey to soothe, Hypericum to ease tension and Meadowsweet oils to relieve tired sore muscles, this gently warming and soothing rub is brilliant at encouraging your troubles to slip away. Essential oils including Eucalyptus, Pepper and Ginger work to invigorate and revive, providing an uplifting experience that's welcome after a long day. Use a little to massage into hands, feet, legs or shoulders and you'll feel so much better - plus your skin will feel incredibly hydrated and supple too.
What do you think about using a unique texture to keep your body looking and feeling fabulous?
