We're a nation of lip balm addicts. We hoard multi-coloured pots of soothing potions, alongside brightly coloured and sweet smelling concoctions that do little more for our lips than make them a bit glossy. There's something instantly gratifying about picking up a new lip balm, and something somewhat nostalgic about applying those little compact tubes across our pouts. (Maybe because it was the only form of cosmetic permitted within a school environment!) I can't resist a novelty balm - not because of the efficacy of the smooth formula, but because of the smile it brings to my face when I apply. From peanut butter Reese's Pieces flavours to blueberry Jolly Rancher bottles, my collection is somewhat expansive and childlike. However, these two new launches bridge the gap between effectiveness and giving in to your inner child. I'm already a big fan of Balmi, but I Love are expanding their repertoire with some cute lip products that will make that smile even brighter.
Balmi are really taking off in the UK, now being available from not only Boots and Superdrug, but from fashion retailers including Topshop and Urban Outfitters - proving their cool kids credentials. Their existing flavours include a refreshing spearmint and comforting strawberry, but these new metallics make lip balm a sexier experience. Cherry (red), Roseberry (gold) and Blackcurrant (purple) scents are hidden within a glossy pack, but importantly these aren't sickly sweet; they're subtle enough to be suitable for even the most serious of wearers. Although the square shape is somewhat impractical when you're short on space, it does make the Balmi balms easy to find when you're rummaging around in your bag! Furthermore, the cone shaped balm ensures it's easy to apply while the formula is light enough to hydrate without overloading lips.
I Love may be more well known for their super sweet body washes, but they're expanding into other areas that can equally benefit from a sprinkling of fun. These Tinted Moisture Balms are super affordable (£2.99 each,) pigmented and comfortable to wear - while being housed in cute packs that make them a little more exciting than your standard Chubby Stick impersonation. Although the lids are quite impractical and pop off if you chuck them in your bag, they're fun enough to justify a purchase. The colour result is strong and relatively long-lasting, considering these cost less than a Starbucks latte; if you don't like the feeling of lipstick or can't face the dryness that often occurs half way through the day, then these could be a definite alternative.
Neither of these will rock your world. Neither will restore chapped lips to their former glory. However, both will brighten up a dull Autumn morning and turn that frown upside down - and sometimes that's all we need.
The Balmi lip balms are available from Boots, Superdrug, Urban Outfitters and Topshop priced £4.99 each. (Variants may vary in stores.) The I Love... tinted balms will be available online, priced £2.99, from www.ilovecosmetics.eu this November.
