Believe it or not, up until couple of years ago my makeup brush collection consisted of a few eyeshadow brushes and a fluffy powder brush or two. I applied the majority of products with my fingers (gasp, horror) and relied on the applicators provided within products (now a mortal sin.) Until makeup brushes really became a 'thing' on the high street and brands such as EcoTools and Real Techniques started landing on my desk, I really wasn't wise to the power of a great applicator. Although there are a huge number of brands now available, it's sometimes hard to know where to turn if you don't want to spend a small fortune on a new collection of tools; even Real Techniques can get a bit pricey if you buy more than a few brushes. Introducing Nanshy - a brand that focuses on creating great tools at affordable prices, that are both ethical and durable so you can create the best looks possible. I'd never heard of them before they landed on my desk just before I flew off on holiday, so I popped the fresh fluffy tools in my case ready to give them a while... And I was seriously impressed.

The simplicity of the design keeps the focus on the performance of the durable and well packed bristles; the black handles and silver ferrule are understated but sophisticated, providing a tool that's pleasant to hold and light enough to prevent arm ache when you're creating an extra smokey eye. The ombre effect of the bristles also helps to control the amount of product that you pick up on the brush, minimising waste and encouraging a little buffing too. I've been seriously impressed with how great these brushes are, especially as they're yet to shed even a single bristle... Why have I never heard of Nanshy until now?
My favourites of the collection are definitely the conceal perfector brush (£9.95) which helps my foundation to apply flawlessly, even getting into the nooks and crannies I often need a blending sponge for, and the stippling brush (£9.95) which is perfect for adding a touch of bronzer. The tapered crease brush (£5.95) is super soft and fab for buffing a taupe colour into lids, while the blending sponge (£5.95) features all the right curves to do the job even better than the original Beauty Blender. What's even better is that you can pick up bumper packs of up to twelve brushes for only £49.95, making a huge saving while introducing you to tools you may never have benefited from otherwise. I'm baffled as to how these are so affordable.
A lot of the time, unless they're rose gold coloured or part of a fancy limited edition collection, makeup brushes are somewhat ignored as a functional tool that doesn't require a lot of attention. However, your tools are the secret to makeup success - if you've got knackered, dirty, frazzled brushes, then your makeup is going to be ten times harder to apply well. It's great to see more brands popping up that make almost-professional results achievable at home, without having to invest a small fortune. Although Zoeva, Real Techniques and Crown are fab, I've got a feeling we'll be hearing a lot more from Nanshy in the not too distant future.
