Danièle Ryman Massage Candles: The Multi-Functional Product That Looks Like A Cream

Massage candles are not a new thing, but they do continue to surprise and delight me. They have so much more to offer than a standard pot of wax, marrying the invigorating benefit of scent with a formula that helps to nourish and care for the body. (Plus anything that encourages a little pre-bedtime massage is good with me.) French-born Danièle Ryman is widely recognised as the world’s leading aromatherapist; the author of six books (printed in 18 languages) a lecturer and creator of products for major companies across the globe, her knowledge and passion for scent is unrivalled. Utilising her experience in the best possible way, Danièle has developed the formulation for her  new range of multi-purpose massage oil candles with the purest quality essential oils. All of them have natural antiseptic, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties, while the candles themselves can be used in a multitude of ways. Used at spas around the world, her range comprises of six candles that offer a variety of benefits: Alive, Detoxify, Defence, Sleepy, Slender and Unwind.

She describes the six individual scents: "Alive awakens your senses and makes you more feel alert and revitalised, helping you to regain energy and start the day feeling vibrant. Detoxify detoxifies with its high concentration of essential oils, helping to eliminate toxins while giving you a sense of wellbeing. The Essential Defence candle boosts the immune system with its highly antiseptic and bactericidal properties, defending against viral infections all year round. Sleepy helps to relieve tiredness and mental fatigue, aiding sleep and recuperation by soothing mind, body and soul, while Slender helps to flush out waste, discourage water retention and combat bad circulation (all key for toning) while lifting your spirit. Finally, Unwind helps alleviate migraine caused by stress, general headaches and anxiety, putting the mind to rest and making you feel relaxed." All that from just a candle? I'm in.

The candles themselves are quite small, but they look more like a pot of skin cream than they do something you set alight. They're discrete and stylish, meaning they're perfect for travel if you struggle getting to sleep or want to give yourself a little boost. The scents are subtler than I anticipated, but pleasant nonetheless; they definitely set the mood and provide a relaxing atmosphere of an evening with a delicate flutter of a flame. Unlike a lot of massage candles that provide a greasy and too-rich wax, these offer a lightweight and workable texture that's easy to use and leaves skin feeling nourished. Suggested uses include not only massage treatments, but dropped in to a steaming bath as an alternative to an oil, for daily body moisturising, in manicures and pedicures, or simply as a nourishing balm for targeted dry patches.

Although I'm not convinced these would actually help to boost your immune system or 'detoxify' the body in any way, they are great little candles with a great concept behind them. I'm all for multi-functional and travel friendly products, and these provide just what I need pre-holiday; an intense balm, a sleeping aid and a mood enhancing product in one little hand-luggage sized tub. At £30.00 these aren't cheap, especially when compared to other candles that are three times the size, but if you're in the market for a treat - why not.
