Three Great Multi-Functional Skin Oils (And Why You Need To Integrate One Into Your Routine)

Skin oils are definitely having a moment; everyone seems to be obsessed with the multi-functional benefits a little bottle of rich oil can provide. Saturated with effective ingredients in much higher concentrations than your usual moisturiser, they provide a great way to treat your skin without overloading it. Because oils are lipophilic (or fat loving) they pass though the lipid layer of the skin faster, preventing water loss and plumping skin with moisture more effectively. If you apply an oil before your anti-aging cream, the oil molecules also trick the skin into letting active ingredients (such as retinol, glycolic acid and vitamin C) penetrate deeper into the skin, without irritating the surface. The great thing about skin oils as they don't have one specific purpose: you can use them before a moisturiser, as a night treatment, mixed with your foundation or even rubbed onto dry patches and cuticles. Although they can be intimidating, finding a great product that integrates into your routine is the first step to discovering the benefits a little oil can bring. Here are three of my current favourites.

1. Skin & Tonic: Brit Beauty Oil (£28.00)
This super rich and organic oil is distilled in the UK, making it homegrown in more ways than one. Rich in omega fatty acids and antioxidants thanks to the inclusion of Borage, Thistle, Orange Blossom and Chia Seed, this oil will help minimise fine lines, reduce large pores and reinvigorate your normal cellular function, i.e. helping your skin to rejuvinate and repair. It looks great, feels great and really nourishes my skin; I've taken to applying this before bed and massaging it into skin, as well as adding a few drops into my moisturiser in the morning.

2. MeruMaya: Everything Everywhere Beauty Oil (£26.50)
This non-greasy formula contains Kahai Oil, which has 50% more Vitamin E and twice as much Linoleic (essential fatty acids) than Argan Oil, as well as three times more retinol than Rosehip Oil. It also includes Oat, Grapeseed and Jojoba oils to provide moisture, increase elasticity, soothe, brighten and nourish the skin. However, it can also be used as a scalp treatment, to nourish cuticles, tame brows, reduce hair frizziness and even act as an overnight foot treatment. Wowzer. A few drops are really great after cleansing, both morning and night, as it absorbs quickly to leave skin feeling plump - but you can also pop it in your bag for any skincare emergencies on the go.

3. Pixi Skintreats: Rose Oil Blend (£26.00)
This botanical blend is infused with a powerful complex of youth-preserving oils to help improve skin's elasticity and glow. It smells incredible and feels like a real touch of luxury, but does good too. Sweet Almond, Rosehip, Jojoba, Pomegranate and Rose Geranium oils nourish the complexion to leave it feeling smooth to the touch. Although it's a little too rich for the morning for me, it's a great product to use before bed if I want to look radiant the next morning; just massage it in using circular movements and focus on pressure points to make the most out of the ingredient rich formula.

Are you a fan of facial oils, or are you yet to dip your feet into the oily pool?
