Hair damage has been cited as the number one hair concern of women globally. That's no surprise, seeing as it's been over ten years since the launch of the most revolutionary moment in hair for decades: straighteners. Every day we subject our locks to huge amounts of heat (drying, styling, preening and topping up with the most powerful tools we can lay our hands on,) which leaves hair feeling and looking incredibly dry and damaged. Although it can be hard to put down the styling tools or step away from the paddle brush, there are options that are kinder to hair while still providing the support we require on a daily basis. Remington's new PROtect straightener and dryer claim to hydrate hair using Hydracare and Thermacare Technology, ensuring your locks are both protected and styled to perfection every day. They challenged me to switch up my usual tools for this innovative duo for a week, and this is how I got on.
First up the Remington PROtect Dryer (£39.99,) which harnesses innovative technology to deliver fast drying results with less heat. The lightweight dryer is sleek and stylish, easy to use and quick to dry hair too; I was expecting this to take much longer than my usual hardcore professional dryer, but it actually dries my hair thoroughly in around the same time. The precise nozzle helps to direct heat where I need it, ensuring a smooth and frizz-free finish that also reduces the need for straightening afterwards. (Always a bonus when you're trying to reduce potential heat damage.) It even includes an 'Advanced Dryer Ring' around the nozzle, which is infused with a super blend of micro conditioners (including Keratin, Argan and Macadamia oils) for super shiny, healthy-looking hair... Fancy.
There are three heat and two speed settings, as well as a diffuser attachment, to ensure you're in control of the results and only use concentrated heat when you really need it. In addition, the dryer features Ionic ceramic conditioning, which delivers 90% more ions to hair and seals in moisture for frizz-free shine. Even upon the first use I noticed a difference in shine and condition, the 'frizz halo' around my head being significantly reduced. After a week my hair is full of bounce, shine and life. Considering the affordable price point (which is around a third of the price of my usual dryer,) I was really quite impressed - plus it will save me so much weight in my luggage when I travel to the US for two weeks this September!
Next to come under scrutiny was the Remington PROtect Straightener (£89.99.) As a straightener addict (I have six and counting...) I was intrigued to see how I got on with the much larger format of the Remington PROtect. It combines ultra wide ceramic plates with revolutionary Hydracare technology to provide 90% more frizz control and 68% more protection from breakage, compared to standard Remington straighteners. A water barrel within the plates provides hair with a cool mist to hydrate while you style, while the infused ceramic plates (again with Keratin, Argan & Macadamia oils) help ensure shiny, healthy looking hair when you're done. The plates heat up within fifteen seconds to your desired temperature (five different settings depending upon the style you're looking to achieve,) ensuring you can get ready even when in a morning rush.
However, what's great is all that fancy stuff goes on in the background and doesn't require any faffing to harness the additional benefits. The width of the plates means you can straighten a larger section of hair at once, speeding up the process and reducing the amount of times you 'double back' on sections when you don't need to. I did find it harder to get to the baby hairs around my forehead under control, plus adding movement to the ends took practice, but the result was definitely kink-free and shiny. The only downside? I use my straighteners a lot to curl and style my hair too, but the large plates were somewhat prohibitive when it came to creating effortless curls; the width of the ceramic edge meant on my mid-length hair there was only enough room to create a subtle wave, but for a quick-out-the-door-style it still totally works. (I'll just be opting for another weapon of choice come Saturday night!)
Overall I was pretty impressed with what these tools had to offer. They're easy to use, provide smooth and frizz-free results, care for my hair and look stylish too. You may assume that dialing down the heat has a negative impact on the result, but this duo proves you can still achieve the style you want without damaging your hair. If you're in the market for some new tools, it's well worth investing in those that offer more than just super-charged temperatures - your hair will thank you for it in the long term.
