I very rarely have a bad thing to say about Kiko Cosmetics; their collections and launches nearly always hit the spot, delivering on both price and performance. We've had bold and bright colours inspired by Miami, golden tones influenced by the Vegas lights and even 'precious' gems in the form of highlighting palettes. Their latest launch simply called 'Rebel Romantic' delivers a huge range of products that are woven together (albeit loosely) with the theme that you're either a lover or a hater; the strong blues and reds are counteracted with nude lipsticks and contouring pens that can be used to delicately frame the face. However, I can't feel a little underwhelmed and disappointed by the brand that usually pulls it out of the bag and exceeds expectations.
Although there's nothing wrong with this collection per se, the vintage inspired packs and classic shades don't really seem to offer anything new. Although the lipsticks are embossed with a delicate pattern that wouldn't be seen out of place in Downton Abbey, and the eyeshadow pots offer a beautiful tone that will definitely brighten the usual Autumn palettes, they seem somewhat at odds with the chunky contouring crayons and nude lip liner. I'm so used to feeling passionate about pretty much everything that lands on my desk from Kiko, that I'm not sure how to sum up this almost run-of-the-mill collection that could be from any brand.
However, the quality is still great and the price points are always incredibly affordable. The lipsticks offer a strong glossy pigment that's comfortable on the lips, the eyeshadows are the right side of shimmery to ensure they can be worn all year round, while the liners provide a decent result that doesn't require too much effort. Although the contouring crayons are a great idea in theory (they come packed together as one product, so from the offset you're equipped to highlight and shade,) they're a bit too thin and heavy to work effectively into skin; it's much easier to stick to powder and a buffing brush.
It seems, like MAC, I expect revolutionary ideas and bold concepts from Kiko that can be translated into 'love it or hate it' products and tones. As a fast moving brand who relies on selling a vast quantity at affordable price points, I just can't imagine how this is going to inspire passion and need from their consumers. As a staple collection it may have worked, but as a limited edition portfolio to take us into the next season? It's a no from me. What do you think of Rebel Romantic from Kiko Cosmetics?
