I must have been hiding under a rock when these new beauties from Clinique launched, because I only just found them lurking at the bottom of a bag completely undiscovered and unused. It seems that Clinique can't get enough of the 'Chubby' brand, labeling anything and everything with the name in the hope of creating a new bestseller. There's something undeniably cute and youth evoking about chubby cheeks and a wide-eyed stare, which is why they seem to be literally bottling it and selling the concept in droves. You can't deny the success of Chubby Sticks, having born a hundred copies since their launch a couple of years ago - but this time it's the turn of the eye category to have a piece of the pie. The Chubby Lash 'Fattening' Mascara offers up an oversized volumising brush to transform lashes from 'fine and faint to bodacious and bold' in an instant, while the supporting liners provide an easy way to achieve definition and easy peasy style.
I'm not normally a fan of plastic bristles or straight wands, as I don't find they really capture lashes and build product well - but these mascaras have totally changed my opinion. The oversized wand is easy and comfortable to use, helping to coat and lift lashes pretty much from the first application; you don't need tonnes and tonnes of product, because the Chubby Lash formula easily builds the look you want with an incredibly rich pigment. I always try a mascara a couple of times before forming an opinion, as the bristles and formula need a little bit of love before they start performing to their maximum potential, but from the very first try I was hooked; even my mum commented at the weekend and asked if I was wearing false lashes! You do have to be careful not to overload your lashline with product (as it does have a tendency to clump and stick together after the third coat or so,) but Clinique have definitely created a winning formula with these chunky tubes.
In contrast, the Skinny Sticks provide an ultra fine line of colour that can be built up along the lashline to highlight and contour the eye. Although the blunt nib is tricky to work with, I do like the white pencil in the inner corners of my eye to help conceal dark circles and contrast with a touch of black liner. The troublesome issue is that the product is so delicate that it breaks off every time I use the nib, meaning it won't last long before you need a new liner altogether; at £15.00 a pop, you just can't justify a purchase that breaks off every time you get a little too heavy handed. However, the Pretty Easy felt tip liner more than makes up for this gaffe - it's simply brilliant. Having just gushed over my love for Estee Lauder's new Little Black Primer I was expecting to be underwhelmed by what Clinqiue had to offer... But this is even better. The ultra fine and jet black pigment glides over the lid to create an effortless clean line in one steady sweep. It claims to be budge-resistant and offer up 24hrs wear, and it definitely does just that; when I go to remove it at the end of the day, the result is just as perfect as when I first applied it.
These offer great staples that you can't really go wrong with, at an affordable price point. Although I would pass on the Skinny Sticks altogether, the Chubby Mascara and Pretty Easy liner are sure to be cult classics of the future - it's just a shame they didn't launch to a rapturous applause like the rest of the Chubby range has in recent years.
