Are Watercolour Nails The Hot New Trend For Summer? NEW Morgan Taylor 'Chrome'

Nail art definitely had its moment a few years ago, but it seems we're all too busy faffing with a million other innovations in beauty to worry about creating immaculate looks on our talons twice a week. I'm fully embracing the nude nail trend as it means I don't have to worry about matching, while my hands have definitely benefited from being paint-free as much as possible in the last few months. However, there seems to be a movement in the nail industry that's seeing us re-claim nail art in the best possible way. The hottest thing to hit the high street is a new kind of artistry that requires no talent whatsoever, little time and even less precision; the messier and more creative the better. Both OPI and Morgan Taylor are launching 'watercolour nails' just in time for summer, which inject a touch of fun and a splash of colour into our looks. The latter are also putting a metallic twist on the look, providing a flurry of options for every nail enthusiasts - regardless of skill level.


The concept behind this collection is that the silver metallic polish acts as a 'base', while the six other shades can be layered over the top. They look very dark in the pots, but in fact apply much lighter and more transparent than anticipated; the texture and tone ensure it's easy to build up the colour result, layer one shade over another and simply have a bit of fun. Thanks to the silver base the colours really 'pop', but they can equally be worn over a white or naked nail for a slightly different finish; experimentation is key to this look! I'm nowhere near an expert at applying polish, but even I can create some cool looks with this portfolio of colour and texture: from 'tie dye' and ombre, to artistic splodges that look really rather effective.

Although the six shades provide a good spectrum of colour, I'd love to see more shades and more delicate tones so I can wear this look throughout the year. It's very bold and brash, meaning there's only so many outfits you can get away with it with; a few lighter shades or pastel tones would completely refresh the trend and take it all the way through to spring. At £10.50 each these polishes aren't cheap either; it's a real investment to buy the collection, so you better love it before making a purchase! It would have been fab to see these in mini bottles that are far more affordable and a purse-friendly starter kit, but you never know what's around the corner... I've no doubt this will filter down into the more affordable brands in the coming months too.
