Two Brands, Two Budgets: Bare Minerals 'Pop Of Passion' Vs MaxFactor 'Intensifying Lip Balm'

Tinted lip balms were one of the best things ever invented; a hint of a tint, partnered with a rich and creamy texture that helps to hydrate lips while adding a touch of shine, is just what I need come the summer season. I probably have more tinted lip balms in my collection than non-tinted formulas, simply because they bridge effortlessly between the need to soothe lips and the need to add a touch of colour. Although there are hundreds of different formulas, textures, tones and packs available on the high street, these two brands have outdone themselves to create a lightweight finish that still packs a punch. Bare Minerals have launched their Pop Of Passion (£16.00) in seven different shades, while MaxFactor Intensifying Lip Balm (£8.99) includes nine different tones of varying intensity within the collection. Considering one is half the price of the other, how did they stand up when they were put head-to-head?


At first glance the Bare Minerals balms certainly look the part, especially when compared to the basic and rather outdated packs of their Max Factor counterparts. However, in the spirit of 'do it like a dupe' week - it's all about what's inside that counts. Both balms apply easily to leave a rich texture on the surface of lips with a comparable amount of pigment; there's hardly any difference between the two and you could easilymix and match without realising which brand you were picking up. The Max Factor version is a little smaller and the tip a little more precise, meaning it's a bit more practical for on-the-go and easier to apply in a hurry, but the Bare Minerals bullets are still suited to applying effortlessly.

I personally find the Bare Minerals formula needs re-applying more regularly as it's a touch lighter on the lips and doesn't hydrate over a long period of time, which considering it's almost double the price of the alternative it's a little disappointing. However, the Max Factor balm does have more of a tendency to melt - so you do need to be careful if you're out on a warm sunny day, or intend on taking one of these on holiday! In all honesty there's very little to separate these two fabulous products other than the packs and their price points. If you want to indulge and know you'll get a lot of use out the product, then absolutely pick up a Pop Of Passion - however, if you'd rather spend that extra £7.00 on a cocktail then the Max Factor Intensifying Lip Balm is more than a sufficient summer treat.
