Although many women choose to embrace their natural state, for millions of us the summer months mean a need to 'up the ante' and ensure we're beach (or skirt) ready at a moments notice. With the sun making an appearance when you least expect it, prepping your pins regularly is the key to removing any last minute worry about leg fuzz. I've always been a shaver (body hair as always been more of an occasional inconvenience rather than a serious issue for me,) but I've recently been rediscovering the wonderful world of Veet. My last dip into the non-shaving water was nearly a decade ago - and how things have changed since then. Veet now offer a portfolio of hair removal solutions that are both easy to use and kind to skin, making the process as metaphorically painless as possible. No longer is hair removal the sticky, messy, smelly chore it once was...
My first ever 'proper' experience of waxing aged 32, came courtesy of this little EasyWax gadget that provides pretty-much-professional results at home. The handheld device warms up the cartridge to provide an easy-to-apply wax that's rolled onto skin with ease; it ensures the wax is at a constant optimum temperature so there's no nasty surprises, whilst the wax itself is made of 90% natural ingredients. Once you've applied the hot wax, you simply use the strips included to rip away any hair and leave your pins looking and feeling super smooth. I was really impressed with how easy to use and effective this little gadget was, even for a novice like me; the results lasted nearly three weeks before I felt like I needed to re-visit my hair removal too, making this perfect for prepping ahead of summer.
At £29.99 for the starter kit, and £9.99 for the refill, the EasyWax is a much more affordable and time effective way of keeping hair at bay than visiting a salon. However, if you're not quite ready to make that kind of commitment then the Veet Wax Strips (£6.99) provide the perfect introduction to waxing without any heating up or faffing required whatsoever. Available in strips for both the body and face, you simply warm the wax strips between your hands, seperate the two sides and apply to skin in the direction of hair growth; once you've made sure the strip is well and truly stuck to skin, just rip it off quickly to reveal smooth skin beneath. These are great for a top-up, or just when you need to remove hair quickly without jumping in the shower; although they're not as effective as the EasyWax at grabbing every last hair, they're a great alternative if you just need a quick fix.
The final product I've been giving a go is the Hair Removal Cream (£6.99) which has basically blown my mind. If you ever tried the old school Immac (a previous incarnation of Veet!) then you may assume that depilatory creams smell vile, irritate the skin and create a huge mess in your bathroom that never quite leaves it looking the same again. Ten years after the last time I tried one of these, things have certainly changed. This thick cream contains shea butter, grapeseed oil or aloe vera (the choice is yours) and helps to 'dissolve' the hair on the surface of skin within ten minutes; as it gets to work it also nourishes the skin to leave your legs feeling fabulous. Although there's still that chemical undertone that reminds me of my teenage years, the scent has definitely moved on and is much more palatable than it previously was; the cream is thicker and stays put even when you're in the shower, and it just doesn't irritate skin like I remember. I didn't hold out much hope for this, but the first time I used it my legs were left feeling incredibly smooth and totally hair free for over a week. If you're short on time, don't like the dryness that often comes with shaving legs regularly, or simply want to shake up your routine, then this is a great place to start.
Hair removal isn't the most glamorous of topics, but we all have to do it. (Well, the choice is yours but I personally wouldn't want to step out with hairy pits a-la Julia Roberts!) It's easy to stick with what you know and continue doing the same old thing, but technology has seriously moved on and there are much more effective, caring and enjoyable experiences. After I did some serious damage with a razor and almost bled out in the bathroom (slight exaggeration, but the blood spurt was enough to encourage me to put down the razor for good!) these products collectively provide a way for me to manage my body hair in a way that's kinder to me in more ways than one. Next time you're wandering the aisles of Boots looking for a new razor, maybe pick up something different instead... You never know how much you'll enjoy it.
