I've been having conversations with fellow bloggers about what could be 'the next big thing' for some time, speculating that what we'd be obsessed with in six months time simply hadn't been invented yet. We didn't know what this would be (a new format, a new social media platform, a new app or simply a new way of having conversations,) but it's become apparent in the last week that it's undoubtedly Periscope. If you don't know anything about this soon-to-be-revolution, then essentially it's a Twitter-owned app that allows you to live broadcast what you're up to while having real-time conversations with followers. They can tap on the screen to show their love and give you 'hearts' (not unlike a Twitter favourite or Facebook like,) or simply type in a comment or question that you can respond to verbally. It's an incredible way to not only broadcast and provide added insight, but to have real-time conversations with readers that's simply been unobtainable before now.
The founders of Periscope described their journey as such: "Just over a year ago, we became fascinated by the idea of discovering the world through someone else’s eyes. What if you could see through the eyes of a protester in Ukraine? Or watch the sunrise from a hot air balloon in Cappadocia? It may sound crazy, but we wanted to build the closest thing to teleportation. While there are many ways to discover events and places, we realized there is no better way to experience a place right now than through live video. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but live video can take you someplace and show you around." Although YouTube and Vine have provided a visual way to communicate, the lack of real-time interaction always left the networks feeling a bit forced to me. However, Periscope has opened my eyes to a whole new way of communicating with readers and fellow bloggers - suffice to say I'm addicted.
From taking you behind the scenes on a shoot, to de-briefing following a talk and simply providing a preview of products that have landed on my desk, the last few days have reignited my love for social media. I've loved being a little self-indulgent, but I've also loved having a direct line to some of you guys - answering questions, providing advice or simply being able to show you what life is like behind the glossy and posed photographs. Periscope is currently a clean state for all of us, having only launched a few weeks ago, meaning it's a free-for-all and totally up-for-grabs; although I'm finding Instagram hard to grow after being somewhat late to the party, it's fun to start on an absolutely level playing field as celebrities and superstar bloggers.
As it's owned and linked with Twitter it's really easy to find the people you already follow, as well as it automatically posting a link to let your Twitter followers know you're broadcasting. It takes a little getting used to, but when you get the hang of it it's super easy and so much fun. Over sixty people watched me feed my fish this morning - that's how addictive it is. I would thoroughly recommend downloading the app and getting to grips with this new platform (and following me, of course!) as it provides a backstage pass into the lives of your favourite people on Twitter; although it's only currently available on iPhone, the android app is following shortly behind meaning it's undoubtedly going to be the next big thing to hit the world of social media.
