Preparing Skin For A New Season: Top Tips For Transitioning Into Spring

If you look really closely, right up there in the sky, there's a little ball of yellow that may in fact be sunshine... Yey! It's been a long time coming, but finally we're about to come out of the winter months and step into some altogether more pastel-appropriate weeks. Although we feel at ease with changing up our wardrobes or nail polish repertoire to reflect the new season's demands, our skincare routine is often neglected. The focus in winter is replenishing moisture and preventing dryness, whereas in the warmer months our needs move into the realm of perfecting and protecting. As the first chapter of 2015 comes to an end, here are some of my top tips for transitioning into the next one with ease.

Look After Your Limbs
Opaque tights, socks, woolly jumpers and long sleeves are our friends during the colder weather, but as we peel off the layers and reveal skin that's not seen the light of day in months, it's time to start taking care of it. Washing with a luxury body wash that helps to nourish skin, taking the time to moisturise with a lightweight formula and even adding a touch of body oil will really have your skin feeling and looking great. I'm loving the new rich and creamy Dove Body Wash, the delicious scent of the Pistachio Nourishing Body Lotion and the gentle shimmer that the non-greasy Purely Pampering Shea Butter and Warm Vanilla Body Oil provides. Together they provide all you need for preened and pampered limbs, with little effort required.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate
The first thing we need to do as we step into spring is remove the build-up of dry and dull skin that's accumulated over the winter. Our focus is on hydrating as much as possible from October to March, but as we move into warmer April days exfoliating your skin regularly will help to prep it to perfection. Using a gentle exfoliating wash such as Dove's Gentle Exfoliating will help slough away dull skin on a daily basis, while a more intense salt scrub is great to use once or twice a week to give skin an extra boost. The salt crystals are more delicate than fruit kernels (which can be too harsh and irritate skin,) and will help to slough away dead skin while injecting moisture into the surface thanks to their often oily bases.

Swap Heavy Formulas For Lighter Alternatives
My winter skincare routine often consists of the thickest creams I can find, helping to nourish my skin and prevent it from becoming dry as I battle with the elements. However, it's around this time I start swapping rich formulas for much lighter alternatives that contain more sun protection. The elements are a lot less harsh from April onwards, having a lesser impact on the moisture levels in your skin - therefore we don't need to focus so much on replenishing what we've lost. Instead, focus on prepping skin and ensuring radiance shines through; a lightweight serum or moisturiser may be all you need, topped up with a little BB Cream or dewy foundation to ensure you're radiating a spring glow.

Make SPF Your Friend
Protecting yourself from the sun's harmful rays should be your number one skincare priority during this time of the year. UV rays not only are the number one cause of premature ageing, but they can cause pigmentation issues and even cancer - applying a touch of SPF under your makeup will really help to keep those wrinkles at bay, while ensuring your skin is safely protected. You don't need to wack on a hardcore sunscreen, as there are many lightweight products developed specifically for the face: I'm a particular fan of Murad's Essential-C Sun Balm Stick SPF, as well as Piz Buin's Ultra Light Dry Touch Fluid that turns matte upon impact with the skin. If you don't feel comfortable using an additional product, make sure your moisturiser and foundation contain at least SPF20.

Integrate A Facial Spritz
Facial sprays and spritzes are my new favourite thing and a definite staple for spring. Not only do they help fix makeup in place, but they help to refresh skin throughout the day and provide a radiant result. The Pixi Glow Mist is enriched with thirteen natural oils, as well as argan oil, aloe vera and fruit extracts but is non-greasy. Once sprayed onto skin it instantly invigorates the senses, cools, comforts and adds a touch of radiance, but the liquid evaporates within seconds to leave a refreshed complexion. The Caudalie Beauty Elixir is also a great handbaag treat to refresh the skin throughout the day, while providing the nourishing ingredients of grape, orange blossom, rose, organic balm mint and rosemary. They're basically a springtime glow bottled!
