As soon as I'm tired, haven't been eating properly or spend too much time out in the cold, my nails are the first thing to suffer. I buff them, file them and condition them, but still they continue to flake and break. Not only does it cause them to look unsightly, but it impacts the way in which nail polish sits over the top and reduces the longevity of a manicure by about half - if your nails aren't smooth enough to hold on to the polish effectively, it's going to chip all over the place. Butter London have this genius little product that I picked up in Boots, providing the benefit of a flawless base in nail form; they call it 'Nail Foundation' and claim it provides a flawless basecoat, that works like 'makeup for your nails'. But it this a genius innovation, or just marketing fodder developed to make us part with even more cash in the search for the perfect mani?
This silk-finish, stain resistant, non-toxic base coat nail lacquer provides a great foundation for nail polish while simultaneously smoothing ridges and imperfections on the nail. It's lightweight, dries incredibly fast and leaves a matte result that's incredibly subtle but does make a big difference - almost like those photoshopped nails you see in magazine adverts. You can wear it alone if you want a natural result (Butter London even recommend it for men!) but it provides a great basecoat on which to apply your chosen polish. My nails look and feel a lot smoother and there's not as much chipping with this as there is without, making it something I've come to use a lot.
The formula ios free from formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, phthalates and parabens (if you're concerned about that kind of thing,) while the bottle is big enough to last an age. Although this doesn't wave a magic wand over my didgts, it does give me a little more confidence to go polish free or the fact my colour will last more than a day. There are loads of other similar products, but I haven't tried one that provides the same smooth matte finish as this; although it's quite pricey at £15.00, if you're self-conscious about your nails then this may give them an understated boost that's worth the price tag.
The Butter London Nail Foundation is available online and in Boots stores priced £15.00
